A little -German history: Ata Canani, born in 1963 in the south of Turkey, came to Germany at the age of 12, learned to play the SAZ, became a wedding musician and earned himself as the first migrant, who tried to contact the majority society with German -language songs, the honorary name “Ozan”, ie poet. Nevertheless, he could never live from music – or probably because of it – never worked hard to the early age, and only in previous years his now classic songs from back then like “German friends” were rediscovered.
Canani is now continuing to write his story for democracy, his second regular album, my country, WaTe (2021). He once sang from his own perspective, i.e. from the second generation migrants of a family together, he described the everyday reality of his guest worker.
His view of this country is not always so positive
Now he goes one step further and takes the perspective of the third and fourth generation, changes consistently between Turkish and German, and sings about the “The Fathers of our Fathers”: “They didn’t have it easy. What they dreamed of at the time.” In fact, the hopeless optimist Canani is so hope, in the same song it also says: “Foreigners became friends.” And in the title piece, which is rather bluntly directed against the right -wing populists, he celebrates the multicultural reality: “The variety makes everything so colorful and also beautiful.”
His view of this country is not always so positive, “paperwork” complains the German bureaucracy, especially for migrants. Canis Saz dominates his sometimes somewhat stubborn songwriter rock, which has arranged the brass sets, the lake trombonist Jerome Bugnon, gave his music a soul dimension that she has not had so far-and so, at least in the musical implementation, many cultures are completely and peaceful together.
