The Glasgower Institution makes its post rock shine in a slightly different light.
With her last album as the Love Continues, the Scottish Postrock Institution Mogwai achieved a veritable sensation: place one in the British album charts. Mogwai! As usual in Glasgow, you cannot be influenced by such events. And so Mogwai went to the studio in early 2024 to do Mogwai things: make songs out of sketches and to provide them with very strange titles. In this case, for example, “Fanzine Made of Flesh”, “If you find this world bad, you should see some of the other” or “Pale vegan hip pain”.
With all routine: The Bad Fire shines in a slightly different light. The title refers to a Scottish name for hell, and this is exactly what the Mogwai members experienced in various constellations. It was particularly dramatic at Barry Burns: shortly before the recordings, a life -threatening illness was diagnosed with his little daughter. Burns was there in the studio, but – as he says it himself – “like a spirit”.
The extreme situation probably led to the band with “18 Volcanoes” as a fantastically beautiful indie pop song on “Lion Rumpus”, with clear vocals by Stuart Braithwaite-which is an absolute exception in the history of this band .
