The beach guard has no time to lose. And the band called Lifeguard at all. She has been waiting long enough: Singles and cassettes have been released since 2020, then the band had to be patient for around a year until Ripped and Torn finally appeared. Of course, the first piece starts: “A Tightwire” is indie rock in attack mode-like the young Wipers or the thermal at the height of their art.
Even the second song makes it clear that the young band from Chicago gets along on Twists. “IT Will Get Worse” sounds like the Strokes if they found their way back to the garage again. The stanza melody is so strong that singer and guitarist Kai Slater can have it moved to the second verse at “La-La-La”.
This is followed by an interlude with no-wave guitar noise before “Under Your Reach” in Postpunk refers between Joy Division, Dub and Wire and “(i Wanna) Break Out” later addresses the classic punk wing of tearing down walls. The sound of ripped and torn is appropriate to the matter: this adventure begins in the garage and returns there.
