Review: Kim Petras :: FEED THE BEAST

Center shock pop. where only the Jeföhl falls a little by the wayside.

The fact that the term “debut” is used here from the PR side is a bit silly. But, yes, it’s Petra’s first LP on a major label. She has been releasing EPs, mixtapes, singles and features for half her life. Petras is not known as an album artist anyway, she simply creates hit after hit.

Of course, “Feed The Beast” is also full of such. She has completely dispensed with ballads, and with the announcement: “Everything I drop is a banger” (“Uh oh”) and you get what you expect: pure Petra, always between a Cologne girl and a hypersexual Hollywood it girl. The songs are again mainly about sex and are not subtle (“My coconuts, you can put ’em in your mouth”, “Hit It From The Back” etc.), musically you are here with Robyn, Icona Pop, Ace of Base and fairground banging.

But this time Petras is adding another layer. She herself called her music “Slut Pop” (like her last EP), but “Feed The Beast” is too cute and hit-and-miss for that. Even the genre of hyperpop, to which Petras is commonly associated, explodes here, you have to do that first. So let’s try an older category: bubblegum pop. This would be center shock pop. More is probably not possible anymore. Just to say Kölsch: Jeföhl falls by the wayside a bit.
