Review: Katy J Pearson :: Sound Of The Morning

On her second album SOUND OF THE MORNING, Katy J Pearson brings together various updates and ramifications of Britpop and rock into a complex composition. In the fantastic title track, the Bristol artist tells us how the sound of the first hours of the day hypnotized her – and she carried this hypnosis into a folk song made of vocals, acoustic guitar and a kind of flute synth.

On “Talk Of The Town,” Pearson emerges from a driving psych pop song with the voice of a soul searcher: “I was waiting for a time but it’s not now.” The theme of the search recurs throughout the album, with Pearson reflecting on distance and rapprochement in a relationship (“Howl”, “Confession”), perplexity and parting (“The Hour”).

However, SOUND OF THE MORNING does not remain in safe areas. She wrote the pieces after a chill-out phase at the end of 2021, and they were recorded with Dan Carey (Speedy Wunderground), among others. He gave her songs an “in your face” character, says Pearson. The album closes with a cover of Paul Giovanni’s “Willow’s Song” from the THE WICKER MAN (1973) soundtrack, a metamorphosis from quiet ballad to raunchy kraut-pop track – and that, too, is well worth listening to.
