Review: Jana Horn :: The Window Is The Dream

The small Texas town of Glen Rose is home to prehistoric dinosaur footprints, the state’s largest outdoor crucifix manufacturing facility, and last but not least, singer/songwriter Jana Horn. Now based in Austin, there’s still a certain mystical introspectiveness about their folk that one can craft in a cut-off community. The debut OPTIMISM by the then newcomer advanced from being completely unknown to the critics’ darling last year. Jana Horn has now written her successor THE WINDOW IS THE DREAM in isolation in a single room, in which she could indulge in memories, look out of the window or both at the same time.

You can no longer tell from her gentle folk that Horn liked to go to screamo concerts in her youth. The fact that she teaches literary writing, on the other hand, is. Her lyrics remain enigmatic and poetic: fleeting streams of thoughts that string together in the confines of her room without wanting to be a diary. Musically, the singer/songwriter enriches her dream landscapes with cello and vibraphone. The folk-typical acoustic guitars alternate with those that are electronic. But even driving guitars drive slowly and gently with Jana Horn.
