Review: Fettes Brot :: Hitstory

“It’s 1996…” – well, does the rest of the brain autocomplete the entire song? “Yeah sure, uh no, I mean: Yes”? Which other band from Germany has written so many songs like this that have become so ingrained in our flesh and blood? Who accompanied us from the MTViva screen to the youth center to the wedding party? Tocotronic, logo, and of course Die Ärzte. Fettes Brot even connects both of them with their own stories. In front of their role models from Berlin (from Berlin!), they already established themselves in 1997 on the tribute album GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG with a version of “What nerves does the boy have” (with the appropriate outro “With us nobody can keep up anyway / Because we are the [Ärzte/Brote] and there are three of us”) bowed. A year later, the Hamburg model students were again the backing band on the modification of the Bananarama oldie “Robert De Niro’s Waiting…”, the rumbling “Nicolette Krebitz Waits”.

But Fettes Brot doesn’t stand on the shoulders of these giants, they are giants themselves. Non-negotiable cultural property and
here in Germany pioneers of hip-hop, which dominates the youth of the 21st century. In addition, they managed the rare feat in this genre, over a period of two decades, top hits (with taste) in the local Top 40 bang. A career that will find its dignified end in 2023, while it is still unprecedented and not irrelevant.

A good first impression for newcomers with little time

On the occasion of their last mic drop, Dokter “Rektor Donz” Renz, König Kay “Bee Baby” Boris and Björn “Schiffmeister” Beton summarize their 31-year career on another best-of album. It absolutely has its right to exist, is the last of its kind, AMNESIE, but it’s been a fat 21 years. And since then, the three MCs have landed quite a few hits – including their biggest “Emanuela”, the other Top 3 success “Bettina, please put something on” and “On days like these”. They last saw the top 20 from the inside in 2013 with “Echo”.

These four late work smashes are joined by six classics like the one mentioned, the over and over mentioned Jein, Gay Girl and Nordic By Nature and… that’s about it. Ten tracks. 25 fewer than the retrospective FETTES BROT FÜR DIE WELT collected in 2000. These compilations are related to each other like the slim SOLID GOLD HITS (2005) by the Beastie Boys, who are similarly trained in rap and punk, to their powerful ANTHOLOGY: THE SOUNDS OF SCIENCE (2000). For newcomers with little time, a good first impression (and only that counts), the rest is left to the shows of the farewell tour, which ends in September with the Brotstock Festival.
