“You’ll make a killer of a Jewish girl” – yep, this Jewish girl is pissed off. Before Sabrina Teitelbaum changed her name to Blondshell, the New York native released dark-tinted pop under the pseudonym Baum. Now it means: explosive name, more explosive music. Not that BLONDSHELL is a punk record like benchmarks à la Hole and Nirvana would suggest. Teitelbaum docks more to contemporary emo-indie (pop) rock and, with its melancholic mood, is closer to Phoebe Bridgers or Snail Mail than to Courtney Love. But she also celebrates the noise and saves herself the sheet in front of her mouth.

In the sultry “Kiss City” the queer songwriter wishes for commitment instead of “casual sex”, in the powerful “Salad” she harbors explicit murderous fantasies about the steady ex of a friend and immediately afterwards admits in “Sepsis” that she herself can go back to her idiot Returning friend: “I know my therapist’s pissed / We both know he’s a dick.” The appeal of the album is to stand up for yourself and your own needs. For Teitelbaum, that means getting loud and mean sometimes. This is granted to her and unfolds intensity. And yet: Sabrina Teitelbaum seems more authentic in the quiet moments.
