Reuter admits mistakes in Weinzierl-Aus

Looking back on the spectacular farewell to coach Markus Weinzierl live on TV and the situation at the end of the season, Augsburg manager Stefan Reuter admitted to making mistakes.

“I know that I don’t do everything right either, that there is also justified criticism. We weren’t always happy with coaching decisions,” Reuter told the “Augsburger Allgemeine”.

The fact that they wanted to sit down with the coach after the Bundesliga season was “communicated with Markus for months, and also in the last week,” said Reuter. “He himself has often enough confirmed in press conferences that we will meet after the season. I could only speculate why he announced after the Fürth game without a vote that he would no longer be available for talks,” said the manager of the FC Augsburg.

Weinzierl had announced his farewell live on television shortly after the final whistle on the last day of the game. Actually, a new contract should then be discussed. “For me, it’s the right decision not to have any more talks,” Weinzierl said after the 2-1 win over Greuther Fürth on May 14.

“The crazy thing was: Markus Weinzierl’s interview was still on TV, when the first inquiries and applications from consultants and also from coaches came on my cell phone,” said Reuter, who announced the commitment of his preferred candidate Enrico Maaßen on June 8th .
