Rescue work at the Überseequartier construction site has begun

After the serious accident at a large construction site in Hamburg’s Hafencity with four deaths on Monday, work to rescue the fourth fatality began on Tuesday morning. The man was lying under parts of the scaffolding, said a spokesman for the Hamburg fire department after an initial briefing by the operations management on site.

Industrial climbers should also be called in to rescue the man. A fifth construction worker was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries after the accident on Monday. His condition was stable, it was said on Tuesday morning.

According to initial findings, scaffolding fell into an elevator shaft on Monday morning. According to the urban development authority, the four dead and the seriously injured come from Bulgaria.

It was initially completely unclear why the scaffolding collapsed. There were also building materials on the platform that fell into the depths, said a fire department spokesman. The spokesman initially did not want to comment on media reports that an overload of the platform might have led to the collapse of the scaffolding.

According to the fire department, the scaffolding fell from the eighth floor into the basement. Debris reached the second floor. An operations manager described the mountain of rubble on Monday as a “giant Mikado” made of scaffolding poles. (dpa)
