The White House confirmed on Tuesday that it was aware of a flight of migrants en route to an area near US President Joe Biden’s vacation home in Reboboth Beach, Delaware. A “political stunt” by Republicans, the White House says, which promises to work with local authorities to accommodate the migrants. Later in the day, however, it turned out that the aircraft had changed course and was going to fly to Nashville, in the US state of Tennessee.
Last week, Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis already sent two flights of illegal immigrants from Venezuela to Martha’s Vineyard, a wealthy island in the predominantly Democratic state of Massachusetts. Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott did a similar thing when he sent two buses carrying migrants to Vice President Kamala Harris’ residence in Washington. For now, DeSantis has not yet indicated whether he is also behind the latest stunt.
“Political Theatre”
The White House said it was working closely with local authorities and had not received a warning from DeSantis. “His sole purpose is to create chaos,” said White House spokesman Karine Jean-Pierre, speaking of “political theater” and a “cruel, deliberate political stunt.”
DeSantis, who hopes to be re-elected as Florida governor in November and is considered a possible candidate for the 2024 presidential election, and the governors of Texas and Arizona are sending migrants to Democrat-controlled cities to criticize them. address the migrant crisis at the US-Mexico border, where record numbers of migrants are entering the US illegally.
A spokesman for Delaware governor John Carney said the state is working with the federal government and other groups and is “ready to accommodate these families in an orderly manner.”
Flight path websites show that a flight that was supposed to take off in San Antonio, Texas and head toward Georgetown, Delaware, is now destined for Nashville. It is unclear why the flight route was changed and whether there are migrants on board the aircraft.
