Renewal of the yards

The Mercator will be moored in the last week of March. The yards, the horizontal spars on the front mast, will be removed at the end of April. The new yards will be made of metal to extend their lifespan from 20 to 50 years. The installation will take place in the spring of 2024. In addition to the yards, the entire rope work with blocks will also be renewed.

Protected heritage

The sailing ship is very important to mayor Bart Tommelein: “As the City by the Sea, we attach great value to our maritime heritage. After the major maintenance work on the Amandine, we are now investing in a sustainable way in the Mercator, one of the most iconic landmarks in Ostend. be laid on the quay, which is also the original position of the Mercator.”
