These are the moments that make watching Today Inside exciting: the men at the table can at any time, completely out of the blue, in a verbal roller coaster end up. Last night, René van der Gijp went wild against studio guest Marcel van Roosmalen, who became more uncomfortable by the minute.

Tease to Angela

What is going on? Gijs Groenteman, Marcel’s buddy, has been consistently called ‘Gijs Groenteboer’ in Today Inside for a year now. That’s what regular guest Özcan Akyol started with, but because Gijs reacted so angrily to it, that nickname has now been embraced by all the men at the table.

Unbelievable but true: it now appears that Gijs really cares about that. When Marcel gives Angela de Jong a teasing punch in yesterday’s Today Inside, René intervenes: “We have her here, she’s a fine person. Really, nothing wrong with that. Take it from me: that whole Angela de Jong does not take herself seriously at all, really not at all.”

Gijs Greengrocer

René then bounces the ball back. “I can’t say that about Gijs Groenteboer. He takes himself very seriously.”

Marcel: “Well, I know him differently.”

René: “It’s not for nothing that we called him Groenteboer and that you (points to Wilfred, ed.) take him aside to say: ‘Yes, but that won’t happen again, because we won’t accept that. ‘ Then you take yourself a bit too seriously, because look: all you do is constantly ‘people this’ and ‘people that’, ‘we’re kidding them and those’, but then ‘Greengrocer’ is said and he goes crazy.”

Marcel: “No, not at all.”

Retarded

René thinks that Gijs takes himself too seriously. “A week later he says about us that we are retarded and then I think: he is not that far off. I don’t mind, but he doesn’t mind either.”

Marcel: “I don’t intervene at all, but it didn’t go that way at all.”

Wilfred Genee then comes up with the facts: “You said to me: ‘It’s lame!’ You really didn’t like it.”

Marcel: “I said that I found his sense of humor mediocre. I think name jokes… Yes, if you can’t think of anything better… But I wasn’t furious, I wasn’t angry.”

René: “If you get angry at a name joke, that means you are taking yourself too seriously.”

Marcel: “Not at all. I just said, ‘I didn’t like the joke.’”

‘That stings me’

René completely demolishes Gijs and Marcel. “No, you said we shouldn’t do that anymore. And that stings me a bit, that I think: two people making fun of everyone, and there’s one sitting there who says: ‘Yeah, but you shouldn’t make fun of us.’ Then I think: come on, please!”

Marcel: “Yes, you were not clear.”

René: “I was there. I was listening to it.”

Marcel: “Well, not at all.”

René: “Yes, because you took him aside there and I was standing here. I was standing here eating a nut, I heard it exactly.”

Bland and derogatory

Marcel: “Well, you can. I said I didn’t like the joke. If that is no longer possible…”

Wilfred: “You did tell me that you thought it was bland and derogatory. That it wasn’t necessary, that we didn’t need to make such a joke. That’s what you literally said to me.”

Marcel: “Is that so annoying?”

Johan Derksen: “If there is one derogatory, then it is Groenteboer. That is derogatory.”

René: “Greengrocer is only being derogatory. He should know that himself, but then you should also expect him back. And even worse: what I think is the worst thing… Which I find really annoying often, huh? That Eus says something and that you attack him (points to Wilfred, ed.). Eus said so.”

‘Eus said Greengrocer!’

Johan: “Yes, Eus said Greengrocer.”

René: “We didn’t say it. Then you should call Eus.”

Marcel: “Ehh, yes, sorry.”

Johan: “I call John de Mol. We’ll blow it off.”

Marcel: “I really like it all, but I don’t remember it that way at all. I just remember it very differently. I remember we had a very different discussion.”

Wilfred: “Yes, that came later, but it started with this.”

Marcel: “The only thing I remember is that I didn’t think it was a funny joke.”

Wilfred: “And that you thought it was derogatory, and cheap.”

“Isn’t that allowed?”

Marcel confirms that. “Yes, but that’s allowed, isn’t it?”

René: “Yes, but imagine if you call me different than Gijp. Do I care now, dude. Figure it out!”

Marcel: “He doesn’t care and neither do I.”

René: “But you did say it.”

Marcel: “Yes, so what?”

René: “Two people who piss everyone off will then fall over Groenteboertje.”

Marcel: “I don’t like Groenteboertje at all. Isn’t it just a moment when you tell someone it’s not funny?”

The atmosphere at Today Inside has now fallen below the lowest point. Wilfred after the commercial break: “Welcome back to one of the most awkward broadcasts of the season so far.”
