René Fasel’s tribute is wanted out of the Fribourg hall

Taking Russian citizenship and close connections to a warring country might take away From René Fasel honor in Switzerland.

The Freiburger Nachrichten newspaper reports that Fribourg-Gottéron is required to remove Fasel’s name from the club’s home hall due to the puck manager’s connections to Russia. The former president of the International Ice Hockey Federation was reported to have received Russian citizenship last week and started working Gennady Timchenko as a partner in the company he owns. Fasel also works in Russia in the development work of the Hockey League KHL.

In January of last year, a celebration was organized at Fribourg’s BCF arena, where Fasel’s name was stamped on the stands.

– If we remove Fasel’s name, maybe Slava Bykov’s name should also be removed, and so on. That’s why we need time to think about it.

As a player, Punakonene legend Bykov represented Friborg in 1990–98.
