They were back after 19 seconds and struck late. Hoffenheim misses early relegation, but now has the best chance of staying in.
TSG Hoffenheim has given its match ball, but is about to stay in the Bundesliga shortly before relegation. At VfL Wolfsburg, the team of coach Christian Ilzer did not get over a 2-2 (1: 1) on Friday, in a win the league remaining a game before the end of the season would have been perfect. Nevertheless, the Kraichgauer, who initially jumped on the table with 32 points, celebrated on the couch on Saturday.
Pavel Kaderabek (34th) and Marius Bülter (84th) met for the Hoffenheimer, Wolfsburg cheered for an own goal of TSG professional Leo Östigaard (1st) and the goal of Jonas Wind (81.). Hoffenheim’s rescue would be certain despite the draw if the 1. FC Heidenheim, relegation place 16, was to win at Union Berlin on Saturday (3:30 p.m./Sky). In the case of six points ahead and a nine goal better goal difference compared to Heidenheim, the TSG already has very good cards anyway.
In the Volkswagen Arena, Ilzer’s team had been mottled after 19 seconds. Bülter lost the ball against Patrick Wimmer during a dribbling, the Austrian found Mohamed Amoura in the penalty area, whose flat crossing Östigaard steered into his own goal. However, the TSG quickly shook the shock of the early deficit.
Bazoumana Toure (11th) pulled off from 20 meters, his shot deflected by Konstantinos Koulieraki’s defused VfL goalkeeper Kamil Grabara with flying colors. In this phase, a balanced game developed in which both teams gave each other rooms. Wolfsburg’s Wimmer (16th) forced national goalkeeper Oliver Baumann to a strong parade by low shot.
In the second half of the first round, the TSG increased and put more pressure. At first, Grabara fought a free kick from Tom Bischof (33.) from around 19 meters well before Kaderabek struck. After the flank of Bülter, the Czech drog the ball on the second post.
After the break, both teams start with a lot of momentum. After a counterattack, VfL defense initially blocked an attempt by Anton Stach, Bishop just overlooked the rebound. Stach (70th) had the lead again on his foot, but Wolfsburg’s defender Denis Vavro blocked in the greatest need. In the final phase it became turbulent again: At first wind hit, then Bülter secured the tie to the guests.
