The knot has finally been broken: Florian Wirtz can celebrate in the Liverpool jersey for the first time against the “Wolves”. It shouldn’t have been his last goal for the “Reds”.

Florian Wirtz finally scored his first competitive goal in his 23rd game for Liverpool. The 22-year-old midfielder scored in the 2-1 win against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday and was relieved to end his goal drought. “I was very happy and still am,” said Wirtz after the game. “I was confident that one day I would score a goal. But of course I wanted to start scoring goals and providing assists sooner.”

Wirtz moved from Bayer Leverkusen to Liverpool in the summer for around 150 million euros. After difficult first months at the new club, he came under increasing criticism. Wirtz was completely convincing against the “Wolves” and rewarded his strong performance with a 2-0 win.

“It was very nice. The feeling on the pitch with the fans around me,” said the DFB star on Sky. “I just knew this day would come.” He just tries to carry on like this. Speaking to the BBC, Wirtz explained that the Premier League is the toughest league in the world and that he has to get used to the physical rigor and his teammates in midfield. “Every game I feel a little better, so it should continue,” said Wirtz.

LFC coach Arne Slot was also positive and believes that Wirtz will now score more often. “He’s going to score a lot more goals like this,” Slot said, adding: “Everyone in the football world knows what they say about him, even if he doesn’t.”
