The allowances for members of Parliament and general board members of the water boards will increase. The allowance for Members of Parliament will increase from € 1,329 to € 1,895 gross per month. The proposal is to set the remuneration for the General Board members of the Water Boards at € 720 gross per month instead of the current remuneration of € 545. This will make the remuneration appropriate to the workload associated with these positions. This is necessary to keep these offices attractive. This is stated in the proposal that the government will submit to the Council of State for advice.

Minister Hanke Bruins Slot: “Members of the Provincial Council and the general boards of the water boards play an important role in our democratic system. The remuneration of these members was no longer in line with the weight of the duties these representatives fulfil. With this increase, we strengthen their position and thus democracy.”

Members of parliament and general board members of the water boards usually do this work alongside their jobs. They do not receive a salary, but an allowance. In 2007, the number of Members of Parliament was reduced by 25%. The result is that fewer members of Parliament are doing more and more work. In addition, Members of Parliament are increasingly faced with major national challenges such as the energy transition, housing and the nitrogen problem.

These compensation amounts will apply to the members of Parliament and general board members of the water boards who will take office after the forthcoming elections in March 2023.
