Referee Stieler in focus: Penalty after video evidence

Fürth (dpa) – And again Tobias Stieler was the focus of a referee debate. However, the 40-year-old did not act as a video referee in Cologne’s basement, but instead directed the Bundesliga match between SpVgg Greuther Fürth and Borussia Mönchengladbach as referee.

After Fürth’s Timothy Tillmann fouled opponent Stefan Lainer in the penalty area in the middle of the first half, Stieler initially allowed the ball to continue. About three minutes later, at the tip of Kölner Keller, Stieler ran to the sidelines to watch the scene again. He finally corrected his decision and pointed to the point.

This process subsequently caused a lot of irritation for Fürth’s sports director Rachid Azzouzi. Stieler was sure that he didn’t have to leave, complained Azzouzi, who didn’t want to see a clear wrong decision.

Curious: Stieler was the video referee at FC Augsburg’s Bundesliga home game against Mainz 05 on Wednesday, April 6th. However, he did not draw the attention of referee Matthias Jöllenbeck to an incorrectly awarded penalty. Once again, a debate broke out about the usefulness of the video assistant. “What are they doing in Cologne?” Mainz coach Bo Svensson was outraged.
