Gherry Henry has already come into contact with the Red Bull universe as a player. Now he could come back as a trainer.
In the search for a new coach for the coming season, RB Leipzig has brought a prominent name into play – but apparently without real relevance for the Bundesliga club.
As the French newspaper “Le Journal du dimanche” reports, Thierry Henry is said to be a candidate for the position of head coach in Leipzig. Accordingly, there have already been talks with Jürgen Klopp, the new “Head of Global Soccer” at Red Bull and with Red Bull top manager Oliver Mintzlaff. A personal meeting is planned.
However, according to information from the “picture”, Henry plays no role in the concrete considerations for the coaching position in Leipzig. The situation is different in the extended Red Bull soccer network. The former world -class striker could have a future there.
Red Bull has been involved in the French second division club Paris FC since October last year, who is currently fighting for promotion to Ligue 1. Henry’s name is mentioned in connection with the club. He could also be an option in the English traditional club Leeds United, in which Red Bull is involved with a minority. There, Daniel Farke is under observation despite sporting success.
The connection between Henry and the Red Bull cosmos is considered tight. During his time at the New York Red Bulls from 2010 to 2014, he set up close contacts. Mintzlaff had brought him into conversation several times for various positions in the past.
The 47-year-old currently works as a TV expert for the US broadcaster CBS and holds shares in the Italian club Como, where CESC Fàbregas works as a trainer. Most recently, Henry looked after the French U21 national team, was previously coach at Montreal and the AS Monaco and assistant coach of the Belgian national team. Apparently he is open to a new challenge.
In Leipzig itself – according to “picture” – Oliver Glasner and Fàbregas are the more promising candidates. However, both are still under contract with their clubs – Crystal Palace and Como. An obligation is therefore considered complicated and expensive.
