## Renewable Energy Achieves Record 58% of Germany’s Electricity Demand

In the first half of 2026, renewable energy sources contributed a historic 58% to Germany’s electricity consumption, marking a significant milestone. This achievement was primarily driven by substantial contributions from wind and solar energy. Despite this progress, the country still falls short of its legally required targets.

### The Surge of Renewable Energy

Germany continues to embrace green energy, with renewable sources covering a record share of electricity usage. According to estimates from the Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg (ZSW) and the Federal Association of Energy and Water Management (BDEW), renewables met 58% of the country’s electricity demand in the first six months of 2026. This represents an increase from the 55.2% recorded in the same period of 2025 and 57% in 2024.

### The Target of 80%

The legal framework for renewable energy in Germany is outlined in the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG), which mandates that at least 80% of the gross electricity consumption must come from renewable sources by 2030. Currently, Germany is still significantly below this goal, indicating the need for ongoing investment and expansion in renewable technologies.

### Wind and Solar Energy Take the Lead

The increase in renewable energy utilization is attributed mainly to enhanced generation from both land-based and offshore wind energy sources. There was a reported 7% increase in onshore wind and a remarkable 28% in offshore wind generation. Solar energy production also contributed to this growth, with a 3.7% rise. However, a lack of rain led to a 7.7% decrease in hydropower generation, while biomass generation saw a slight increase of 0.6%. Overall, renewable energy facilities generated 152.2 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity between January and June.

### Ambitious Expansion Goals

The expansion of renewable energy installations remained robust in the first half of 2026. The photovoltaic sector showed significant growth, while wind energy installations added an impressive 2.5 gigawatts, up from 2.2 gigawatts in the previous year.

### The Impact of Fossil Fuels on Energy Prices

Frithjof Staiß, the head of ZSW, emphasized the critical role of increasing renewable energy production in stabilizing energy prices. A higher proportion of renewables translates to reduced dependence on fossil fuel imports, thereby enhancing the resilience of the economy against energy price shocks. Furthermore, the expansion of renewables is viewed as a powerful tool in combating climate change. For electrification to reach its full potential for climate protection, it must rely on renewable energy sources. Recent heatwaves underscored the urgency for effective climate action.

### Low Share in Total Energy Consumption

While renewable energy accounted for 57.7% of electricity generation in the first half of 2026, its share of total energy consumption in Germany remains considerably lower. In the first quarter, renewables represented just 21.5% of the total energy mix. Fossil resources, including mineral oil, natural gas, lignite, and hard coal, still accounted for a dominating 77.2%. The remaining shares primarily consisted of electricity imports and energy generated from waste incineration.

This record achievement highlights the progress Germany has made in transitioning to renewable energy sources. However, significant challenges remain before the nation can reach its ambitious sustainability goals. Continued investment, innovation, and commitment to renewable technologies are essential to ensure a greener and more sustainable energy future.
