The article was first published at 4:12 p.m. and was later updated with a statement from Mbappé
According to consistent reports, doctors at Spanish record champions Real Madrid examined star striker Kylian Mbappé, who was suffering from pain, on the wrong knee in December. The newspaper “El País” and the trade journal “Marca” wrote that they had unequivocally confirmed the revelation by the French broadcaster “RMC Sport”. The striker himself denied this on Wednesday evening and blamed himself for the reporting.
According to El País, the resulting misdiagnosis “aggravated” Mbappé’s knee injury and delayed recovery. The French international striker was foaming with anger, it was said in “Marca”. The medical department’s error caused chaos at FC Bayern Munich’s next Champions League opponent, the paper assures.
The French journalist Daniel Riolo said on Tuesday in the “RMC” program “After Foot” that the Royal team’s doctors had simply made a mistake about the knee and therefore made a wrong diagnosis. “An MRI scan was performed on his right leg, although he was experiencing pain on his left leg,” it said. This “really upset” the captain of the Équipe Tricolore when he found out about it.
Mbappé denies: “Maybe I’m indirectly to blame for it”
Update 8:47 p.m.: Mbappé himself denied the report on Wednesday evening. Again according to “RMC Sport” he said at the press conference of the French national team: “The report that the wrong knee was examined is not true. I may be indirectly to blame for it. If you don’t communicate, everyone takes the opportunity to fill the gap – that’s how it works.” There was always clear communication with Real. “I’m happy that I can feel good in both knees. “In a way, I also owe that to my club. I’m very happy to be here, fit and healthy.”
In Paris, Kylian Mbappé found “the right solution”
The various parties involved initially did not comment on these statements. Mbappé, who suffered the injury in Real’s home defeat against Celta de Vigo (0-2) on December 7th, said in response to a question on Monday: “I was lucky to find the right solution in Paris.” He was “not the happiest player in the world” during this time.
“El País” wrote that the Real doctors’ mistake had been confirmed “via directly involved sources”. The renowned newspaper emphasized: “The sources we consulted at the club did not deny this.” Mbappé was treated in Paris by doctor Bertrand Sonnery-Cottet and is now “100 percent fit,” said Riolo. After a long break at Real, the 27-year-old came on as a substitute in the victories at Manchester City (2-1) on March 17th and on Sunday against Atlético Madrid (3-2) and did not feel any problems. He is therefore expected to play in the French national team’s World Cup friendly against Brazil on Thursday in Boston and against Colombia in Landover near Washington on Sunday.
