When Xabi Alonso played at Real Madrid in the 2014/15 season, his team -mate Luka Modrić was almost 30 years old. The Spaniard left the royal summer, played at FC Bayern for three years, ended his career as a professional, made his coaching certificates, coached the real youth for a year, the second team of Real Sociedad and three years Bayer 04 Leverkusen. He is expected to return to Madrid as a coach for the coming season – and Modrić could still be in the squad at the age of 40.

The Croatian Treaty is currently expiring on June 30th and so far a lot looked like it was the last season for the midfielder. In 36 league games, Modrić was only 16 times in the starting eleven and only got more playing time from coach Carlo Ancelotti in the second half of the season due to the major injury problems. The fact that the Italian leaves the Spanish record champion after four years could be a lucky case for the midfield droutinier.

Because his designated successor Alonso, according to a report by the “Marca”, is considered a big fan of Modrić’s style of play and explicitly wants to extend his ex-player. The upheaval intended in Madrid in the age structure could only make the Ballon-d’Or winner from 2018 with a year of delay. A new contract will apparently not fail due to the will of the player, it is said.

Modrić has been wearing the royal jersey since 2012 and played 590 games, 71 of them by 2015 alongside Alonso. Together, the two strategists won three titles with Real, including the Champions League in 2014.
