Rapper Hurricane G is dead

Gloria Rodriguez, who became known as a rapper in New York under the name Hurricane G in the 90s, died on Monday (November 7th) of complications from lung cancer. The 52-year-old’s death was confirmed by Erick Sermon on Instagram. Both have a daughter together and rapped together for many years. Hurricane G was one of the first Puerto Rican rappers and the first woman in the hip hop collective The Death Squad.

Erick Sermon wrote on Instagram: “My heart is petrified today. One of my good friends…the mother of my eldest daughter passed away today. [Hurricane] Gloria was a legend of the hip hop community in her own way…she was one of the first Puerto Rican rappers and rapped with me…she paved the way.
She was in all the hip hop magazines with all the top women of the time. She will be missed around the world. I can’t believe this…she was a wonderful person, a wonderful mother, as real as she can be. We love you G.”

As early as May 2022, her daughter Lexus Sermon confirmed the cancer in one Facebook post: “My mother has stage 4 lung cancer. … I have never cried so much in my life, I have never felt so removed from reality in my life. Despite this, my mom still manages to come to terms with everything and say, “Don’t worry baby, everything will be fine.”

Hurricane G became known in the 90s for her special way of rapping, because she switched between Spanish and English in her songs. In addition, she spoke in one “Newyorican” dialecta combination of the Spanish spoken in Puerto Rico and the New York slang.

She started her career with the label HOLA Recordings, a label from New York. The name stands for “Home of Latino Artists”. Under this direction she released her debut album ALL WOMAN in 1997. The most successful of the 15 songs on the album was “Somebody Else”. It peaked at number 10 on Billboard Hot Rap Singles in 1997.
