The Berlin historian Ilko-Sascha Kowalczuk is annoyed by statements made by individual Rammstein members about the former GDR.

The historian wrote on Twitter: “Rammstein is a GDR nostalgia band. Anyone who doesn’t believe that should listen to the incredibly stupid statements made by the so-called keyboardist Flake about the GDR.” The reason for Kowalczuk’s statements is a quote that MDR shared on the occasion of the birthday of Rammstein singer Till Lindemann on January 4th.

Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk quotes Lindemann: “In the GDR we didn’t have much, but there was a feeling of solidarity that I miss now. Today we are up to our necks in consumerism, selfishness and individualism.” The quote bothers the historian, who wrote on Twitter that it fits his “image of this honk”.

Like Kowalczuk, Lindemann and Flake were born in the former GDR. In the past, Flake has repeatedly complained about changes in the Berlin district of Prenzlauer Berg since reunification – that seems to bother the historian. He won’t be more specific. After studying history, Kowalczuk specialized in dealing with the SED dictatorship and the history of the Stasi.
