Rai Vloet appeals against sentence for killing 4-year-old Gio

Football player Rai Vloei from Schijndel is appealing against the prison sentence he received for killing 4-year-old Gio Roos. Earlier today, the judiciary itself also announced that it would appeal against the sentence of 2.5 years in prison.

Vloet’s lawyer tells regional newspaper BN DeStem that they are now also appealing.

The professional football player caused the accident on the A4 in which the toddler died. The court in Haarlem sentenced Vloet to 2.5 years in prison. The Public Prosecution Service (OM) had demanded an extra year and is now appealing. It is still unclear why the OM is appealing.

Relatives disappointed
The relatives of the killed Gio were previously disappointed with the punishment that Rai received. The professional football player from Schijndel caused the accident on the A4 in which the toddler died.

“It’s painful,” said the family’s lawyer. “The judge speaks of sincere remorse for Vloet. The relatives have not experienced it that way. Vloet did not even look them in the eye at the hearing.”

The lawyer for the next of kin called the one-year sentence reduction ‘very substantial’. “The court speaks of recklessness, the most serious form of guilt. Then she should have embraced the sentence of the Public Prosecution Service.”
