The book tells the story of a shy boy at a caravan camp who breaks through at Ajax and makes it to the world top. His life as an analyst and family man is also discussed. Vlietstra followed him intensively over the past two years.
The now 42-year-old Van der Vaart is proud, he tells AT5. “I wanted to make a positive book and we did that. I haven’t read it myself, to be honest. But it seems to be an easy book to read.”
He is not a man of luxury, says Vlietstra. “He doesn’t drive a big car, he doesn’t walk around in expensive clothes: he doesn’t care about any of that. I found that fascinating; that he has remained so completely normal in it. He is also really a family man.”
