QOTSA for Hurricane:

“You become uglier, you become more forgetful and everything still has to go on,” sings Marco Michael Wanda resignedly on Sunday afternoon and interrupts the song for a moment of remembrance for bandmate Christian Hummer, who died in 2022. The audience claps appreciatively, but is then followed up with an encouraging “Hey ho, Cotton Eye Joe” to transform the melancholic hangover mood on this hot Sunday into a good festival moment. But many others still only have one thought: shadow, shadow, shadow.

Luckily, a water cannon between the Forest and River Stage sprays a fine mist into the emaciated crowd – with wet clothes it’s easier to make it across the square to the Wild Coast Stage, where Edwin Rosen offers shelter in the dark tent. The really hardened ones, on the other hand, dance with Frank Turner in the blazing sun or sway to the grown-up wedding band sound of The 1975 from Manchester.

Josh Homme’s transformation into a pirate seems to be almost complete: the gold tooth of the now goateed singer from Queens of the Stone Age flashes in the evening sun and even he, the heat-tested man from Sky Valley, has to admit that it’s still pretty hot here. The only one who doesn’t break a sweat is guitarist Troy Van Leeuwen, who wears a suit as usual. With “No One Knows” the set starts straight away with a crowd favorite, while the new song “Negative Space” still needs encouragement from the band: “Don’t worry, it’s good.” And who exactly in “Make It Wit Chu”. If you listen, you won’t miss the little Rolling Stones homage with a snippet of “Miss You”.

“Now we’re going a little old school. Do you like a little old school? Great!”, babbles Brian Molko later in the evening after some collector’s pieces on the River Stage. Although Placebo’s set doesn’t include all-time favorites like “Pure Morning”, “Special K” and “Every You Every Me”, they end on a grand note with their Kate Bush cover of “Running Up That Hill”.

“Shit, tsunami!”: The hurricane overwhelms the doctors

Just two hours The doctors? Belafarinrod apparently also thinks there isn’t enough time, as they simply start their set ten minutes earlier behind the curtain – more precisely, in front of two curtains. Because after the first drop, they troll the fans who are already there with another privacy screen with the words “Almost… Die ❤️te”. Anyone who doesn’t sprint from the Dixi to the stage will miss “Westerland”, “Ignorama” and “Is that still punk rock?”. “It’s a decent crowd of people,” says Farin, who greets Bela with a “Hey, nice to see you” and his middle finger. And the audience is also properly introduced to Rod, the “future frontman of Rammstein”. Today, however, there is a fourth band member: Victor from Security, who Bela noticed as a real legend in the pit during the Queens of the Stone Age performance. The omnipotence card is quickly played to suspend the surfing ban in force on the Hurricane – “only if you are drunk and wearing heavy skydiving boots: pace yourself”.

“Glorious Years” brings great joy to the “Down with the Spendierhosen” fans – the wildest mosh pit in the front rows and a party mood all the way up to the chain carousel is brought by the “Schunder song”, where it gets really dusty again. The Donots had already bragged about the biggest dust cloud of the festival – but Die Ärzte are still trying to top Friday’s sandstorm. Several times a La Ola appears at the other end of the festival, rolls up to the stage and blows the band away like a tsunami.

“Got rid of another piece of rainforest?” Farin comments on Bela’s extremely generous drumstick throwing. “That little bit of mahogany doesn’t make the rainforest any thicker, says my husband” – the more often the drinking fridge behind Rod, disguised as an amp, opens, the better the comments on the bass and drums. Even a black bra makes it onto the stage – with the power of instant noodles with vegetables in the push-up bag. Thank you, The Doctors and Hurricane 2023 – that was really fun.
