Completely surprisingly, Charles Leclerc ended the Formula 1 qualifying from Hungary in front of the McLaren. The more bitter the performance of Ferrari teammate Hamilton.

Leclerc amazed on Saturday in Budapest in his last round with the best time. He was also amazed. “Today I don’t understand anything from Formula 1. The whole qualifying was very difficult”, said the Ferrari driver from Monaco: “It is one of the best poles I have ever had because it came absolutely unexpected.”

Previously, McLaren had dominated in training and also in the first qualifying rounds on Hungaroring, in the end World Cup leaders Oscar Piatri and Lando Norris only came to places in two and three. A rain shower with a fall in temperature could have been a cause for this.

“The wind has changed a lot. Many curves felt completely different”, Piatri said: “I was surprised that we weren’t faster. Second place is still a decent starting position.”

Verstappen drives after

World champion Max Verstappen could not keep up and ended qualifying in eighth place. He had already weakened in training. “We didn’t have a pace and no grip all weekend”said the Dutch at “Sky”.

In the overall ranking, Verstappen already has 81 points behind Piatri before the 14th season run on Sunday (3 p.m., live ticker on sportschau.de). Norris is 16 points behind his teammate as a second in the World Cup.

Hamilton frustrated

Record world champions and Hungaroring record winner Lewis Hamilton will start four places further back. Starting position twelve is the next disappointment for the British after switching to Ferrari. He left Q2 and could only watch his team -mate Leclerc in Q3 surprised.

Accordingly, Hamilton commented according to the qualifying: “The team is good, the car is on the pole – you probably have to change the driver.”

Hülkenberg is penultimate

Nico Hülkenberg also caught a bad qualifying day in a kick. Despite faster trips in the training session, the only German pilot was already eliminated in Q1 and was 19th only Alex Albon im Williams had an even worse time. “I have no idea what was going on” said Hülkenberg: “The good feeling from the training rounds was suddenly gone in qualifying. The balance was replaced.
