Qatar 2022, World Cup play-offs: Peru-Australia, Costa Rica-New Zealand

To complete the Qatari World Cup draw there are still two places left: the four national teams will compete between Monday 13 and Tuesday 14 June

The last two places remain to be assigned to close the Qatar 2022 draw. It is time for international play-offs: Peru will face Australia and Costa Rica will face New Zealand. Both matches will be played in Al Rayyan, Qatar, between Monday 13 and Tuesday 14 June. Campbell and his team mates finished fourth in the qualifying round for North and Central America, while coach Hay’s team overtook their opponents in the third group stage for Oceania. Only one of the two national teams will remove the pass for the World Cup.

Costa Rica lined up six wins and one draw in the qualifying round to finish fourth, just behind the United States but tied on points. The last victory against USA was decisive: 2-0, Juan Pablo Vargas and Contreras scored. For New Zealand easy life in the Oceania group, Hay’s team overtook Tahiti and then the Solomon Islands. The only precedent between Costa Rica and New Zealand was played on March 24, 2007: the final result was 4-0, a brace from Soborio and goals from Solis and Ruiz. In case of victory, Navas and his teammates would earn their third consecutive participation in the World Cup: this has never happened in the history of the national team. For New Zealand it would instead be a return after failing to access the last two editions. The team participated in South Africa 2010 ending with three draws. And first in Spain ’82, without ever winning a race. In fact, the Kiwis have never achieved a success at the World Cup. But before Qatar, there is Costa Rica: the decisive challenge on Tuesday.
