Confirmed: Ex-Juventus coach Pirlo takes over Fatih Karagümrük

“I would like to go abroad,” announced Andrea Pirlo last summer after leaving Juventus. On Sunday, the Turkish first division club Fatih Karagümrük confirmed that the 43-year-old will be on the sidelines for the new season in the Süper Lig. Karagümrük is the Italian’s second coaching post.

According to the club, Pirlo signed a one-year contract. The club, run by owner Süleyman Hurma, finished the past season in the Süper Lig as bottom of the table. Pirlo’s commitment can also be interpreted as a signal that Hurman wants to give the Istanbul club more appeal in Europe. In terms of sport, it was already the medium-term plan to move into international business, it was recently announced.

World champion Pirlo had collected an average of 2.15 points in a total of 52 games as manager of the Italian record champions Juventus. “It was a year in which I personally grew a lot,” said the 116-time Italy international at “The Athletic” last summer, looking back on the 2020/21 season. Pirlo now wants to take the next step in his coaching career in Turkey.
