Putin and Xi Jinping want to work closely together to counter “Western interference” | Abroad

Russian President Vladimir Putin (71) and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping (70) had an extensive telephone conversation today. During the conversation, the two leaders denounced, among other things, “the interference of Western countries” – and especially the United States – according to Moscow and Beijing.

According to Chinese state broadcaster CCTV, Xi Jinping emphasized during the conversation that China and Russia must “closely cooperate strategically” to counter interference from Western countries. Beijing and Moscow must “defend the sovereignty, security and development interests of their countries and firmly oppose interference by external forces in their internal affairs,” the Chinese president is quoted as saying.

“Support on important issues”

A statement from the Kremlin states that both Xi and Putin have expressed their dissatisfaction with US policy. According to the two leaders, the US is trying to “contain” Russia and China. Putin and Xi Jinping often criticize Western countries that speak out about “domestic affairs”, such as policies in Ukraine and Taiwan or the inhumane treatment of the Uyghur minority in China.

During the “friendly” conversation, which lasted about an hour and took place on the occasion of Chinese New Year, Putin and Xi also promised that “Moscow and Beijing will support each other on important issues affecting their interests.”

Relations between Russia and the West have been very tense, especially since the invasion of Ukraine. Moscow is counting on China, among other things, to relax its isolation. In addition, China is Russia’s most important trading partner.
