Few supporters will have had their nails left on Tuesday evening. There was already a lot of tension on this match in advance and it did not diminish during the 120-minute encounter. An extension was needed to determine who would qualify for the Champions League play-offs.

In 2018, the last Champions League football was played in Eindhoven. The entire club has been yearning for a renewed participation in the million-dollar ball for years. That was noticeable in the Philips Stadium. There was an incredibly good atmosphere.

Weak PSV
The tension in this match was reflected on the field. PSV played sloppy and could barely keep the ball in the team. AS Monaco, on the other hand, was fit and kept up the pressure. Yet it was the Eindhoven team who took the lead. Joey Veerman controlled the ball from the edge of the sixteen-meter area into the goal.

It gave PSV confidence, but the game remained lousy. It was therefore waiting for a goal from AS Monaco. The post gave the home team a hand, but not much later it was still right via Guillermo Maripan. Not much later it got even worse for the club from Eindhoven. Wissam Ben Yedder was the end station of a fast counter. He gave the Monegasque a 1-2 lead.

rising from the dead
No one gave a penny for PSV at that time. There were no chances and the coffin seemed already screwed shut. Until one minute before the end, a free kick ended up on the head of Luuk de Jong. He headed ahead of Erick Gutiérrez, who in turn headed the ball into the goal. 2-2 and thus extend.

In that extension, AS Monaco immediately took the initiative again and PSV escaped again. Breel Embolo headed on the crossbar within five minutes.

It was a 30 minute survival. But just like when no one was still counting on a PSV goal, it did fall. Jordan Teze gave a fantastic cross from the right and when a ball goes to Luuk de Jong’s head, everyone knows it’s hit. The striker did indeed hit the mark as a real specialist and he put the home club back in the lead.

The stadium exploded. PSV were still ten minutes away from the play-offs against Glasgow Rangers. The Eindhoven team remained upright, so that Ruud van Nistelrooij’s team is one round away from the million-dollar ball. And nobody would have thought that after 70 minutes of football.
