PSV suffered a painful defeat on Sunday afternoon. In-house, the team of Peter Bosz lost 2-0 against direct competitor Ajax. Due to the defeat, the people of Eindhoven have a backlog of nine points on the leader. With seven games to go, a line is possible with a pencil.
The starting point was clear before the start. PSV was able to make the title fight exciting again. Ajax could almost certainly drag in the title. So the pressure was with the home team, which had to win on Sunday afternoon.
But there was little to see on the field of that urgency. PSV did not get Ajax under pressure. And the expected storm in the Philips Stadium was not forthcoming.
Frustration
Ajax had control and took the lead after half an hour of play. A free kick still ended up in the wall, but in the attack then the ball came in front of Davy Klaassen. The midfielder shot up close: 0-1.
The backlog caused many frustrations on and outside the field. On the field, the PSV people annoyed the behavior of the Ajax players. Referee Serdar Gözübüyük had to suffer from the PSV fans. The free kick from which the 0-1 was scored was therefore easily given.
Nine points behind
But there were more worries about the PSV game. The Eindhoven club simply did not give at home in the topper. Apart from fifteen minutes after the break it was not to see. Ajax simply had control and even reached 2-0 after 67 minutes. After weak defending of Tyrell Malacia, Bertrand Traoré hit from a distance.
The Philips Stadium fell silent, in the knowledge that the title is going to Amsterdam this year. Because with seven games to go, a gap of nine points can hardly be closed anymore. PSV may even have to look back. Feyenoord is still chasing 2. A place that entitles you to Champions League football at the end of the season.
But a second place is a consolation prize for PSV. The title was the only thing that had this season in Eindhoven, but that mission failed falically. Absurd, when you consider that PSV had six points ahead of Ajax in the winter break. Now it has to watch how it is nine points.
