The game for the UEFA Super Cup became a real thriller. Tottenham looked like the safe winner for a long time, but still gave the title.

Paris Saint-Germain won the UEFA Super Cup. The Champions League winner prevailed on Wednesday evening in Udine, Italy with a comeback victory 6: 5 (0: 1, 2: 2) after penalty shooting against Tottenham Hotspur.

The Europa League title holder from London had caught the better start. In the 39th minute, the “Spurs” took the lead with a goal from ex-Wolfsburger Micky van de Ven. Previously, João Palhinha, who was awarded by FC Bayern, had only hit the crossbar.

Shortly after the break, Christian Romero (48th minute) increased to 2-0.
But then PSG turned up: In the 85th minute, the Parisians achieved the connection through Lee Kang-in, and in the fourth minute of stoppage time Gonçalo Ramos equalized. There is no extension in the Super Cup, which is why the penalty shootout immediately brought the decision.

PSG was also 0: 2 behind there before the two former Bundesliga professionals van de Ven (VfL Wolfsburg) and Mathys Tel (Bayern Munich) shot for Tottenham. The Portuguese Nuno Mendes converted the decisive penalty for Paris.

In advance, the discussions about PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma determined the headlines: coach Luis Enrique stroked the goalkeeper from the squad after the club Lucas Chevalier from Lille signed for 40 million euros. Donnarumma was horrified that his days in Paris should be counted despite the unique previous season. Manchester City is considered a possible buyer.

Chevalier immediately stood in the goal for the Italian, who had taken a key role on the way to the Champions League triumph. The new goalkeeper got little to do at first, but at PSG there was little reminiscent of the demonstration of power from the royal class final against Inter Milan (5: 0). The stubborn offensive around Ousmane Dembélé lacked determination.

Chevalier was in the spotlight shortly before the break: the end of the Bayern loan João Palhinha, who was right in the starting eleven, the 23-year-old steered on the crossbar, he was powerless at Van de Ven’s margin. The leadership of the Londoners, who had disappointed in the past Premier League season and had separated from Teammanager Verzecoglou shortly after the first international title in 41 years, was not undeserved.

Tottenham expanded the lead at the beginning of the second half-and was able to thank Chevalier: the PSG goalkeeper looked extremely bad at Romero’s header. The French tried a lot, but the supposed connection by Bradley Barcola (65th) did not count due to an offside position. Lee’s distance goal, on the other hand, Ramos brought PSG into the duel from the point. Among other things, ex-Bayern star Mathys Tel for Tottenham and Paris crowned the winner.
