The first round starts on Friday in the DFB Cup. The Bundesliga clubs do not want to give themselves naked as favorites. The outsiders lurk on the sensation – and reenerated Arminia Bielefeld. As a third division club, the East Westphalia made it to the final last season. Questions and answers about the 83rd edition.
On which days is the DFB Cup played?
30 of the 32 games in the first round will be held from Friday to Monday. At the start and on Monday, three games take place at 6 p.m., another will take place at 8:45 p.m. Saturday and Sunday will kick off at 1 p.m. (two games), 3:30 p.m. (six games) and 6 p.m. (three games).
The first round is only completed a week and a half later. Since VfB Stuttgart as the reigning cup winner and FC Bayern Munich as German champion on Saturday (8:30 p.m./Sky and Sat.1) compete against each other in the Supercup, they are not yet in the competition. Instead, the games of the two clubs are scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday after the Bundesliga start.
What are the cup games on free TV?
As usual, the Pay TV provider Sky is the only media partner to broadcast all games. ARD and ZDF show selected games on free TV in every round. The duels between the previous year’s finalist Arminia Bielefeld and Werder Bremen will start on Friday (8:45 p.m./ZDF), followed by Rot-Weiss Essen against Borussia Dortmund on Monday (8:45 p.m./ARD).
The games from VfB Stuttgart at the second division club Eintracht Braunschweig on August 26 (8:45 p.m./ARD) and from Bayern Munich at the third division club SV Wehen Wiesbaden on August 27th (8:45 p.m./ZDF) are also freely received. Summaries can also be seen at the streaming provider DAZN and on linear television at Sport1.
Which duels can fans particularly look forward to?
At the start of the competition, several derbies were drawn. Between the stadiums of third division RWE and Bundesliga heavyweight BVB are just under 33 kilometers. In the DFB Cup, the first small district derby has been going on in 17 years: 2008, also in the first round, Dortmund won 3-1 in Essen.
The home venues of Eintracht Norderstedt and Bundesliga club FC St. Pauli are even closer together – almost 14 kilometers. At the request of the regional league, the duel is not held in Norderstedt, but in the Millerntor Stadium. For Werder Bremen, the second division leader Arminia Bielefeld should be about a revenge. Just half a year ago, the Arminia had thrown the Bundesliga club out of the trophy in the quarter -finals – and thus continued their dream run into the final. Now there is a quick reunion.
How high are the bonuses in the DFB Cup?
The German Football Association easily increases the cup bonuses. According to the association, a total of 75 million euros are in the pot this season – and thus 800,000 euros more than in the previous year. Each of the 64 first-round participants automatically receives 211,886 euros (previous year: 209,453 euros). As last, there is 4.32 million euros for victory in the final, the final loser can comfort itself with EUR 2.88 million.
The premiums per round are doubled by the semi -finals. Accordingly, there is 423,772 euros (instead of 418,906 euros) for the second round, 847,544 euros (previously 837,813 euros), for the quarter -finals 1.7 million euros (previously 1.68 million euros) and for the entry into the semi -finals EUR 3,39 million (previously 3.35 million euros).
When will the next cup round be drawn?
Which duels will rise in the second cup round is certain on August 31. Then the draw in the German Football Museum in Dortmund is shown as part of the ARD sports show. The 16 games for the 28th and 29th October are scheduled.
What records can be cracked in the DFB Cup?
No club will pass the 20 titles of FC Bayern so quickly. Manuel Neuer, who is currently at six titles, could crown himself as a record winner among the players. If the Munich team has won their first title in the cup for five years, the goalkeeper would catch up with Bastian Schweinsteiger, who won a total of seven times with Bayern from 2003 to 2014.
Three of the reigning trainers have already won the DFB Cup. In addition to last year’s winner Sebastian Hoeneß, this includes Niko Kovac, who once won with Eintracht Frankfurt and FC Bayern, and today’s Bochum coach Dieter Hecking, who triumphed with VfL Wolfsburg in 2015. If Kovac also wins the trophy with Dortmund, he would not only rise to the shared record winner, but after Karl-Heinz Feldkamp, he would also be the second trainer who wins the trophy with three different clubs.
What is changing this season?
Nothing changes in the mode of the DFB Cup, but the set of rules, on the other hand, was easily adjusted for the new season. The eight-second rule should ensure less time game: If goalkeepers check the ball for longer than this time, the opposing team will be awarded a corner in the future.
Even smaller changes of rule, such as in the case of a double contact with penalty, could have a major impact in the cup. If the shooter accidentally hits the ball twice or shoots his other leg, it was automatically a mistake – in the event of a hit, it will result in a repetition. If the penalty is shot, an indirect free kick for the opposing team continues. In the event of a false shot, it would be the other team’s turn.
