“Prototype Rapstar”: Sido, Massiv, PA Sports and Ali Bumaye are looking for rap talent in their new casting show on YouTube. Everything about the first episode, read here
“Prototyp Rapstar” is the launch of a new YouTube format by the rapper Massiv, which aims to put the genre at the center of a classic casting show. And the jury: In addition to Massiv, Sido, PA Sports and Ali Bumaye are in the chairs, supplemented in the first episode by guest judge Eko Fresh. Together they are looking for the “rap stars of tomorrow,” as the official announcement says.
Editorial recommendations
Ten candidates are competing to prove that they can do more than hooks and TikTok reels – the fight is for the title of “Prototype Rapstar”. The first episode of the new format appeared on YouTube on October 11th.
A casting show format in a rap context
The production aims to provide a stage for German rap newcomers who have not previously had access to larger platforms. Ten artists compete in the first episode: Credoroyal, Roccy069, Braada44, Flex19, Efe Savastano, Scofield77, Mino, Chady052, Sizzo and Jaezshecan. The participants’ performances will not only appear in the episodes, their songs will also end up directly on all streaming platforms. This is the first big stage for the newcomers. At the same time, it is examined who can convince not only with technical expertise but also with charisma and media presence.
With its publication as a YouTube format, “Prototyp Rapstar” moves into a digital environment that has long since become the most important resonance space for German rap. Unlike previous casting show formats – such as “Popstars” or “The Voice” – the project, moderated by Massiv, wants to use the dynamics of the online platform to combine community engagement and reach.
Each episode is designed as an episode in an ongoing series, the development of which also continues off stage, in comments and reactions.
Fan reactions: Playback performances are not well received
The format is currently receiving particular attention from PA Sports, among others, which has recently been in the public eye due to private headlines surrounding his wife Luna Rabea and the Brabus affair. Shortly after the release of the first episode, the comment columns under the video quickly filled up. Many fans praised the implementation and the strong jury, but also expressed clear criticism.
The most frequently made point: The performances are not live, but playback – a crucial credibility problem for many rap fans. For example, one comment says: “It MUST be live! Unfortunately with playback it feels so wrong when watching…please change it!” There is also a comparison with classic casting shows: “In every normal casting show you perform live, why not here?”
But the selection of newcomers also annoys some viewers. For example, one user wrote: “The lyrics of all the participants are so interchangeable. Anyone could rap that, with no personality at all. It’s a shame that such artists were chosen.”
The decision to publish the format exclusively online could prove central to the further development of the show. It is aimed specifically at an audience that consumes rap almost exclusively digitally, and at the same time allows the production team more creative freedom. Whether the concept works in the long term depends on the extent to which the fans’ criticism is taken up. Will the jury be able to combine the energy of real performances with the entertainment value of a classic casting show? The second episode will definitely shed more light on this.
