Washington (dpa -Afx) – In the United States, numerous people have again been on the streets in protest against President Donald Trump’s policy. Under the motto “Fight the Trump Takeover” (“Fight Trump’s takeover”), organizers had called for protests in around 300 cities. One focus was on the city of Austin in the state of Texas, where according to reports of local media, around 5,000 people demonstrated – especially against the newcomers planned by Trump’s republicans.

Protest against tactical new cuts of constituencies

The background is the balance of power in the US Congress, which consists of two chambers: House of Representatives and the Senate. The Republicans currently have a narrow majority under Trump in both chambers. Even before the congress elections in November 2026, the Republicans want to change several constituencies in Texas in their favor – with a possible impact on the balance of power in the House of Representatives. The targeted pull of constituency boundaries is called “gerrymandering” in the USA. Both parties use this tactic to systematically gain advantages in elections.

More protests against Trump than in 2017

Since Trump’s second took office at the end of January, there have been significantly more demonstrations in the United States than in its first term. This emerges from counts of the “Crowd Consortium” of the University of Harvard. In mid -June, several million people went on the streets at “No Kings” protests (“no kings”) – the mass protest is one of the largest in the history of the USA./CFA/DP/ZB
