Product of the week: fashion in cobalt blue

What is it:

Cobalt blue is a color that results from the oxidation of cobalt and aluminum. It is a luminous, light blue, also called sky blue. The shade has been predicted by color and trend agencies WGSN and Coloro as one of the colors of the AW23/24 season, associating the shade with the ‘new space age’ and the ongoing digital transformation of fashion. The duo recommended using the tone in metallic finishes and tactile looks, while also appealing to consumers looking for a sense of escapism. Cobalt has already featured in the SS23 collections, already showing its importance for the year ahead.

Why you should order it:

Cobalt blue is being billed as one of the tones that will define the FW23/24 season. For S/S23, the designers have also already incorporated the rich hue into their collections, showing that it’s already making an impact in the fashion world. The strong shade suits almost every occasion and can be used both on dresses and in casual T-shirts, which gives it a wide range and versatility. Also, the shade is fairly gender neutral, so it appeals to a large audience.

Where we saw it:

David Koma has picked up cobalt blue for his spring 2023 collection. He used it for an oversized bomber jacket, which he paired with a mesh skirt and over-the-knee boots. Alexander McQueen also used the tone for quite avant-garde looks, including an asymmetric leather dress and a flowy cut-out dress. A similar approach was taken by Cecilie Bahnsen, who also opted for cut-outs, albeit in the form of a lace. And Richard Quinn applied the tone in a coat dress.

How to style it:

Cobalt blue is such a vibrant hue that it works well on its own, either in an all-cobalt garment or with a print of a contrasting hue. In this variant, you should combine the garment with accessories and shoes that either contrast with the blue or match the alternative shade of the print. You can do a similar thing with the color of a top or skirt. Either pair the garment with another in a matching shade or contrast with another piece to offer the look.
