Where does the term “quiz” come from?

The word “quiz” comes from English. There are different theories about the exact origin of the word. A rather unlikely theory goes back to the Irish theater director Richard Daly. He is said to have bet that he could add a new word to the English language and invented the word “quiz” for this purpose.

Another theory suggests that the term comes from the Latin question “Quis es?” (in German: “Who are you?”) comes from. The most common theory is that “Quiz” is an abbreviation of the English word “question”.
