Israel’s World Cup qualifier in Norway is also not without background noise. Hundreds of people have already taken a public stand in advance.

Even before kick-off, the international match between Norway and Israel was in the public eye – but not because of sporting headlines. In Oslo, around 1,000 pro-Palestinian people demonstrated in front of the Ullevaal Stadium on match day.

According to the Norwegian news agency NTB, the demonstrators first gathered in the center of the capital and then moved towards the stadium. There they continued their protest until the start of the game.

The police spoke of an overall peaceful event. However, individual expulsions were issued, as the Norwegian media reported, citing the police. Photos and video footage showed that many participants were carrying Palestine flags and Palestinian scarves. Bengali fires were also lit.

The World Cup qualifier had already caused discussions in advance. The background was a statement by the President of the Norwegian Football Association NFF, Lise Klaveness. Before agreeing on central elements of a peace plan presented by the USA, she had spoken out in favor of excluding the Israeli team in view of Israel’s military action in the Gaza Strip. The Israeli association had clearly criticized this demand.
