According to Advocaat.be, the visits to the prisons take place in complete independence. Afterwards, the chairman’s findings are bundled in a report. Last year’s report stated, among other things, that most prisons are in a “deplorable state”. The isolation cells in Ghent, Antwerp and Dendermonde were called “inhumane”.

Our country has a total of 39 prisons. Today there are 13,613 detainees locked up, although there is only room for 11,098 people. The overpopulation rate is therefore more than 18 percent.
