Princess Beatrix appears with a walking stick at the exhibition: she has misstepped | show

Princess Beatrix opened the second edition of the Voorhout Monumental sculpture exhibition on Saturday afternoon. The open-air exhibition on the Lange Voorhout in The Hague is organized by Pulchri Studio, an artists’ association and gallery for contemporary art of which the princess is the patroness. Beatrix appeared with a walking stick because she misstepped this week, the Government Information Service reports.

The princess said she has been walking like this since Thursday, but seemed to have little trouble walking a day later during a visit to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. The walking stick of the 85-year-old princess did not appear in public for the first time on Friday. The copy with tulips, from the hip walking stick brand Ninee, also came out of the closet in 2016.

Beatrix received a sunflower because of the jubilee. Her mother Queen Juliana received the same flower at the opening fifty years ago, referring to one of Vincent van Gogh’s famous paintings. After the handover, the princess was given a tour of the anniversary exhibition Van Gogh in Auvers. The museum celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

First copy

On Saturday, the princess received the first copy of the catalog of the Voorhout Monumental exhibition in The Hague. With that, the exhibition was officially opened. In total, more than twenty sculptures and installations can be seen in the Museum Quarter. In addition, there are a few statues in the Kloosterkerk and paintings, sculptures and video works are shown at Pulchri Studio.

After the opening, Princess Beatrix was given a tour of works on the Lange Voorhout, in the Kloosterkerk and in the garden of Pulchri Studio. The princess also talked to a number of artists, who explained their works of art. The princess then spoke to the curators of the exhibition.

The theme of the sculpture exhibition in 2021 was freedom. “In the midst of all kinds of restrictive measures as a result of the pandemic, the need for freedom could not be greater,” the website of Pulchri Studio read. “For this edition during the summer months of 2023, the artists’ association is reflecting on the Louis Couperus and MC Escher year.” The exhibition can be viewed for free until August 20.

Booster

Piet Warffemius calls the fact that Princess Beatrix came to open the exhibition a boost. “She is the patron of Pulchri Studio, she is also a visual artist and has enormous knowledge,” he says. “Her arrival proves that there is really something special on the Lange Voorhout. Hopefully this will also get through to the municipality of The Hague and the sculpture exhibition will once again receive the attention it deserves.”
