Sandro Wagner’s future remains exciting after the Augsburg exit. However, one possible option is no longer available.

Sandro Wagner’s time as head coach recently ended after just five months. FC Augsburg parted ways with the 38-year-old after a sporting decline and spoke in their statement of a “no alternative” decision. Wagner set out to lead the FCA into a new phase with great confidence. However, the balance showed the opposite: in 14 competitive games under his direction, the team was only able to achieve four wins and one draw, plus nine defeats.

And now? Wagner was initially optimistic, writing on LinkedIn: “The love for football is unbroken” and “We (Wagner and his coaching team, editor’s note) will build on it.” Nevertheless, Wagner is currently looking for a job – and can already rule out a possible engagement.

Recently there has been speculation about a possible return to the DFB staff. Before his time at FCA, Wagner worked as an assistant to national coach Julian Nagelsmann for almost two years. However, DFB President Bernd Neuendorf quickly countered this and put a stop to a comeback. In the “Bild Sport Show” he said clearly: “That’s nonsense.”

Neuendorf also justified the clear cancellation with a view to the upcoming World Championships in the summer of 2026: “We have a really great team of trainers and six months before a World Championships it would be good to get a certain amount of calm in the association. Changing horses now would be very bad.” He also reiterated his trust in the current squad: “Not to mention that Julian Nagelsmann and our trainers are doing a great job. We have full confidence in their expertise.”
