FC Porto mourns club legend Jorge Costa. In the 2004 Champions League victory, the defender led the team of coach Jose Mourinho as captain.

As the club announced, “the legendary captain of FC Porto and current director of professional football died of a cardiac arrest on Tuesday.” He was only 53 years old.

Porto praised Costa as a “indispensable personality in the history of the club” that he had shaped “generations of fans and became an important symbol of postage fans”. At FC Porto, Costa was under contract from 1989 to 2005 and, in addition to the Champions League, also won the UEFA Cup as well as eight championships and five trophies in Portugal.

He had completed 50 games (two goals) for the Portuguese national team and won the U20 World Championship in 1991. The Lisbon club Benfica and Sporting as well as the Portuguese football association also expressed their condolences.
