From 1996 to 1997, Artur Jorge coached the Portuguese national team. Now the ex-coach has died.
Mourning for Artur Jorge: The former Portuguese national football player and coach has died at the age of 78. The Portuguese association announced this on Thursday. The family announced the death “with deep sadness”: Jorge “fell asleep peacefully in the company of his loved ones after a long illness,” said a statement quoted by the Portuguese media.
Jorge had coached numerous clubs in Portugal, including top clubs FC Porto and Benfica Lisbon. He was also active abroad, working for Paris St. Germain among others and winning titles in Portugal, France and Russia (CSKA Moscow).
He also made a name for himself as a national coach: he coached Portugal, Switzerland and Cameroon. From November 2014 to October 2015 he was active as a coach at MC Alger in Algeria; this was also his last stop before he retired from football.
