Porsche share: Porsche is considering high-performance cells in production models

“From our point of view, this cell can be a great innovation. That’s why we’re thinking about the scale on which we want to use it,” said Barbara Frenkel, procurement director of the sports car manufacturer, to Automobilwoche. Originally it was intended to install the cell only in the most powerful models. “But the manufacturing process itself certainly leaves room for fantasies,” says Frenkel.

According to information from Automobilwoche, Porsche wants to build a new gigafactory at another location or use a cell factory built by the VW Group to create additional capacities. The cell is only to be used in the top derivatives of the Taycan and two other series models. The cheaper cell variant could then be produced for hundreds of thousands of vehicles.

Porsche took over the remaining 27.3 percent of Customcells and has been the sole shareholder of the Cellforce Group since mid-May. In Kirchentellinsfurt near Tübingen, Cellforce is building a factory with an initial capacity of 100 megawatt hours. Production is scheduled to start in the first half of 2024. A tenfold increase in capacity is firmly planned at Cellforce. This would then be sufficient for a maximum of 10,000 vehicles per year.
