The ex Bologna wing, fighting with leukemia, will undergo the marrow transplant on Thursday: “I can’t wait to do it”
“I’m ready for transplant and I can’t wait to do it.” Through a video posted on his social profiles, in which he wears the national team training shirt, Achille Polonara wanted to share the last waiting hours before playing the game of life. On Thursday, in the Hematology department of the Sant’Orsola hospital in Bologna, the 33 -year -old wing will undergo marrow transplantation. “Thanks for all the support and love you show me. See you soon on the pitch”.

At the beginning of June, during the series of the Scudetto playoff semifinal that was playing with Virtus Bologna, the diagnosis had arrived: myeloid leukemia, the same one that had hit the former Bologna coach Sinisa Mihajlovic. From there Polonara begins a new battle (only two years ago he had defeated a testicle cancer): he moved with his family – his wife Erika and his sons Vitoria and Achille Junior – in Valencia, Spain, where he underwent chemotherapy cycles and a cure that should lower the risk of recurrence. Last week the return to Italy and the hospitalization to Sant’Orsola for the last cycle in view of tomorrow’s transplant: 90%compatible marrow, which arrived from the United States.

Polonara, who closed his adventure in black and white with the Scudetto won in the 2024-2025 season, has just moved to Dinamo Sassari, a team in which he had already played in the two-year period 2017-2019, and with which he dreams of being able to return to play once the battle against leukemia was won. In the last hours that separate him from the important appointment Polonara has not lost one of his main characteristics as a player: the generosity towards others. “There is a need for many donors and each contribution can be saved by many lives – he concluded in the video -: subscribe to the Admo, your gesture can help many people to live and heal”.
