Politics in De Wolden wants to organize a meeting about bulb cultivation. The subject has caused a lot of dust lately because there are concerns about the possible health risks that are attached to it.

Residents from Ruinen recently said they were worried about crop protection products that are used. GroenLinks also points to the dangers and wants the municipality to find out how bulb cultivation in De Wolden can be limited.

That proposal could not count on broad support from the city council on Thursday evening. Because there is still much unknown about the subject, it seemed wise to speak to experts and supporters and opponents.

“The subject is so large and important that we have to deal with it in the right way,” said Anneke Assink of the PvdA. “There is so much information and what exactly is true of that, we have to investigate that well.”

She was supported by the rest of politics, where all parties call in to schedule a meeting as quickly as possible. “That way we can make the right choices later, if we have to decide something around bulb cultivation,” says Assink.

The discussion about bulb cultivation has been a hot issue in the province of Drenthe for a while. In the municipality of Westerveld, a motion was recently adopted in which the legal possibilities for limiting bulb cultivation are being investigated.

Hundreds of people came to protest prior to the meeting. Farmers on tractors gathered to express their support to bulb counters. Subsequently, a large group protested against the use of plant protection products.

When the meeting will be held in De Wolden is still unclear. A committee will consider that.
