Eight Groningen nature organizations handed over the signatures for the petition ‘Give the Black-tailed Godwit a future in De Oude Held’ on Saturday. Party leaders and representatives of political Groningen have received the petition. A total of 5,348 signatures were collected.

In the meadow bird area Polder De Oude held, the municipality of Groningen wants to compensate for the natural values that are lost during housing construction on the flood plains of the former Suikerunie. This means that part of the polder will be permanently flooded for the benefit of, among other things, the black-necked grebe and bats.

No longer suitable for meadow birds and black-tailed godwits

The result is that this area is no longer suitable for meadow birds such as the black-tailed godwit. Black-tailed godwits are extremely site loyal; they don’t move. The plans of the municipality of Groningen therefore mean the end of this black-tailed godwit population.

The nature organizations continue to discuss the plans with the municipality and want Polder De Oude Held to be preserved for black-tailed godwits.
