On the fifth stage with start and finish in Caen, the Tour pot favorite gets the overall tour. Behind it, however, a German hope carrier attracts attention.

Double Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel won the first individual time trial at the 112nd Tour de France. The Belgian specialist in the fight against the clock won on the fifth stage with start and finish in the northern French city of Caen on a flat 33 kilometers in front of defending champion Tadej Pogačar, who took over the yellow jersey.

Even the finish line was 16 seconds ahead of Pogačar, who thus replaced the Dutch classic specialist Mathieu van der Poel at the top of the overall ranking. The big loser was ex-tour winner Jonas Vingegaard. The Dane lost 1:21 minutes to Evenepoel and didn’t even get the top ten.

The German hope carrier Florian Lipowitz, who drove to sixth place for 58 seconds behind Evenepoel, delivered a strong performance and was even better than his captain Primož Roglič and also Vingegaard.

The second and recent time trial of this tour will be spectacular: Then the steep climb to the airfield in Peyragudes will be on the 13th stage on July 18. But on Thursday, however, the outliers will probably get the chance of a day victory at Bayeux in Normandy, 2015 kilometers.
